Thank Mr. Jobs

When he stepped down in August from his duties at Apple, I knew Steve Jobs was probably going to die soon but I was still surprised at how emotional I felt. Really? Tears for a man I never met?

I have such a special place in my heart for him though. I loved what Gabby wrote here and I can ditto everything she said. I loved reading the tributes and blogs and tweets about his life and his genius and that he was just a good person. The best thing about it is that everything I read or learned about him just made me like him even more. I think that is rare.

Usually, after someone of Steve Jobs' stature dies there are the tributes and then there are skeletons that come creeping out of the closets. That doesn't seem to be happening. The worst thing I've read about him is that he was hard to work for because he was so exacting and a perfectionist.

I love his life story. I love is philosophy on life. I love that his CEO salary from Apple was $1.00 annually.

His creations have had a direct impact on the Rodgers family. Of course we love iPods and iPhones and Apple TV and we are really excited for Santa to show up with an iPad or two this Christmas. And am I the only one who can't bring themselves to throw away the Apple packaging for months after I open something? It is so beautiful!

It was only 6 months ago that I learned that Steve Jobs was responsible for Pixar's continuation and survival. (The Pixar Story is a documentary and is on Netflix 'watch it now'.) If he did nothing else in his life, that alone was such an amazingly beautiful thing. I supposed that could be said for many of his endeavors, but those movies played in extremely important role in the childhood of each of my children. Because of that I have a particular love for them.

I've read many stories about Mr. Jobs, a majority of them in the last few days but this was the dearest to me: For all of his single-minded dedication to the company he built from the ground up, Jobs actually skipped a meeting to take Laurene on their first date: "I was in the parking lot with the key in the car, and I thought to myself, 'If this is my last night on earth, would I rather spend it at a business meeting or with this woman?' I ran across the parking lot, asked her if she'd have dinner with me. She said yes, we walked into town and we've been together ever since."

It came from this article.

All this to say that Steve Jobs will be missed and I believe that in 100 years people will still know who he was and what he was responsible for. He made The Rodgers' world a more beautiful place.

Family Pictures

Here's a taste of the pictures we had taken a couple of months ago.

Cassie Spalding took the pictures and was so great to work with. She was easy going and gave us enough time so that everyone felt comfortable. With these as well as the rest, I felt like she captured the fun and casualness of our group. I love her work.

The pictures turned out great and make me so happy. Goodness! I love these faces so much!

2010-2011

2010 was a great year.

  • 23rd anniversary
  • Hung with the Stanley's when Miss Katie arrived
  • Paul joined the Utah National Guard
  • We did some major renovations on the house
  • Gloria was baptized
  • The Macs and the Richs came for visits
  • Opened the Quilt Room
  • Pauly off to college
  • Made plans for a move west

We have lots of plans for the coming year but I really can't see past March right now so the list is short but very significant.

2011
  • Get the house ready to sell and everything that includes.
  • Paul's mission call and everything that that implies.
  • Move to Phoenix and everything that encompasses.
  • Learn how to spell Phoenix so I don't have to think about it every time I write it down.
  • Trip with Regina to NYC.*

*note to self: Call Liz for suggestions on where to go while we are in NYC.

Wish us luck!

2009-2010

2009 was such a great year!

2009 highlights
Robin turned 18
Paul and I turned 22.
We went on a fabulous trip to Mexico with my sibs. (Thanks again J.R.)
We made great strides, getting our finances in order.
Robin Graduated.
Grandma Gloria married John Rich.
Paul drove a Mustang home from the wedding.
I turned 40.
Pauly worked for Richard and loved St. George.
I took Robin to BYU, where we laid in soft grass and we laughed and cried a lot, mostly we laughed.
I started working at Regina Rooney's artisan shop.
$21,000.00 fell from the sky.

I feel like I haven't been able to catch my breath since May; this Christmas break has been appreciated and well used. Lots of naps and games and Arrested Development.

2010 is shaping up to be just as full.

Some of what 2010 has to offer:
23 years
Begin renovations on our house
Utah National Guard
Pauly turns 18
McEvoys return from their mission
Gloria baptized
Paul off to college
A big trip with just our little family. Mexico? British Virgin Islands? Puerto Rico?

A lot of big ticket items, I hope we can fit everything in!

20 years!!

I love you my sweetheart!
Thank you for giving me this most wonderful life, that has been more fun and full of adventure than I ever dreamed I could have.
You are the BEST!

There's nothing you and I won't do . . .

I Melt With You
By Modern English

For Valentine's Day last year Paul downloaded every version of this song he could find for me. My favorite is a actually a piano solo. We emailed Cory Gabel, who wrote it and asked if we could buy the sheet music. He said it wasn't for sale, at least not yet.

This is the sweet 80's video

another love song

U2 All I Want Is You

This is another one from when we were first married. We have both loved U2 since forever. Of all our U2 favorites, this is the best love song.

When Paul was in Iraq I couldn't stand listening to this. For months after he came home, I could listen to it, but not without sobbing into my hands.

The video for this song is too weird, so this is a live performance. I'm not sure when it was recorded but it must be older because Bono isn't wearing his sunglasses.

Two more love songs

We love Peter Gabriel.

In Your Eyes

This has been one our favorites for years and years. This is the original video. I think the it is distracting (I find all of Peter Gabriel's videos distracting) but this is definitely one of our songs. We love it.

The Book of Love always makes me cry. This is a more recent addition to songs we love and I 'm sorry it is connected to a not so great movie but we love it. I couldn't find a good video for this. I like that this shows the lyrics.

Our songs

I'm feeling romantic this month, thought I'd share a few songs with you.

INXS Never Tear Us Apart

They came out with this song just after we were married. The video made us laugh last night when we were looking things up on You Tube, because we remember it being very, very cool.

We love this song.

We love that this was filmed in Prague; of course we didn't know that back then. We recognized it last night.

At one point we only lived 3 hours away from Prague and visited there several times. We were visiting the Jewish cemetery in the video when 3 year old Daniel wandered off. He was missing for about 30 minutes. I found him about 3 blocks away after we had looked all around that cemetery and called the police. Some very kind people had found him and were keeping him in their store. They heard me calling him and they came out and motioned that they had him. They had called the police too.

Not a very happy memory but one that makes up the last 20 years for us.

When I took Jordan and Jenny Bushman to Prague we had to smuggle tiny Dan out of the country. (A story for another time.) Dan has quite a history in the Czech Republic. Maybe he'll serve his mission there.

2008

WOW! 2007 was a busy year for us. when I look back I can hardly believe we got through it all with our sanity still intact (no jokes please).

Here's a little 2007 rundown:
Paul resigned his commission (sad)
Job search (interesting)
Paul was hired to work for Target (great)
We said good-bye to the military (really tough)
We bought our first house (scary and exciting)
We moved (seemed familiar)
We became chicken farmers (hmmmm)
Gloria started school this year (boo hoo or yahoo?)

Any one of those things would have made this a big year but whew! I'm exhausted.

I was thinking 2008 would be a little quieter but we have a lot to look forward to.
Here's our 2008 rundown:

20th anniversary,
Robin 17, SAT, ACT, college applications, driver’s license, a car??
Paul 16, Priest, Eagle Scout, driver’s license,
Dan 11, soccer, football
Sara 8, baptized,
Gloria 6,
A trip to Utah??
Christmas in Mexico again??

What fun!! Wish us luck!
